“I haven’t enjoyed a novel as much in a very long time. I found it to be a bawdy comedic romance with an extraordinary group of characters. Set in the early 1700’s, it reminded me of ‘Tom Jones’ by Henry Fielding. In the tradition of Fielding, Berry develops a rich and broad picture of an era and uses it as a vehicle to entertainingly explore the weaknesses of humanity and the unpredictable consequences of random circumstance. Berry has a strong visual sense of humor and this well-crafted tale would make a great movie. ‘Welby Stich’ deserves a wide audience.”

“With a nod to the satirical style of Lawrence Sterne (Tristram Shandy), Alan Berry has created a wild hybrid of Monty Python, Tom Jones, and Downton Abbey, adding his own distinct thrust of ribald humor. Gird your loins, as you launch into this parody of olde English family epic drama. Welby Stitch is a humorous, sexy, romantic page-turner that is full of wit, irony, slapstick, and buffoonery. Are we witnessing the birth of a new PBS (or, more likely, HBO) series? I hope so.”  —
